Lead Analyst

Remote (anywhere in the UK)

In this new role, you will have the unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on how the British government tackles COVID-19. The Department of Health and Social Care is bringing contextual information and data together to understand current and emerging risks presented by the virus, including key drivers and concentrations. Benefitting from insights delivered by The Test and Trace service and frontline evidence, we are committed to supporting the government in managing COVID-19 and delivering a realistic recovery strategy, and with your input, we could be one step closer to achieving that goal.

Playing an instrumental role in developing this progressive new unit, you will contribute to shaping the culture of the JCB. With your work ultimately impacting on local, regional and even international decisions, you will take responsibility for overseeing key analysis and assessment outputs. Guiding a team of up to 14 Analysts, you will deliver evidence-based findings that are as close to real-time as possible, shaping risk and transmission information that will determine next steps in the battle against COVID-19. Ensuring your colleagues are meeting your unwavering standards, you will utilise a broad array of qualitative and quantitative sources to identify the communities and sectors most at risk from the virus, and your team’s work will inform local non-pharmaceutical interventions. Sharing your analytical expertise and developing the skills of your team, you will manage the expectations of stakeholders and deliver the highest levels of customer service. As such, you will encourage partnership working with other teams in the JBC, identifying and exploiting a broad array of health and non-health related data and information that could break the impact of the virus.

As a trusted advisor, you will clearly communicate key insights at the most senior levels, working directly with Ministers and key decision makers. As such, you will have exceptional presentation skills, underpinned by comprehensive verbal and written communication capabilities. With experience of leading a large team, you will be an inspirational mentor, working in partnership with the DHSC analytical community to ensure shared learning. Coming from a policy background, you won’t be phased by meeting simultaneous deadlines across multiple projects, and you will have the flexibility to quickly adapt to change. On a practical level, you will have a minimum 2:1 degree in economics, statistics, operational research or social research, and you will be well-versed in working with complex data and information to draw evidence-based conclusions. It would be ideal (though isn’t strictly necessary) if you have previously worked in a biosecurity, health, emergency planning or national security environment. Crucially, you will be a forward-thinking team-player who enjoys collaborating to achieve the best results.

This is a unique opportunity to help us establish a high-performing unit. With immense scope for networking and career progression, you will be part of an inclusive and supportive team who are delivering nationally important work. Further enhanced by a competitive benefits package that includes a generous Civil Service pension and flexible working options, this is a valuable chance to take on the most satisfying challenge of your career.
